Spinal fusion is the joining together of vertebrae in the spine with bone so that they effectively become one bone, and is used to help with symptoms of severe pain affecting the lower back.
Pedicle Screws and Rods
What are the screws and rods made from?
The screws and rods are constructed from titanium. This is a very strong material which has been used for implants for many years. The great advantage in the spine is that titanium is MRI compatible so further scans of the spine are still possible at a later stage.
How are the Screws and Rods adapted to an individual?
Screw sizes are chosen to give the best fit and fix within a particular vertebra. A wide range of diameters and lengths is available. The rods are secured to the screws through very well engineered locking mechanisms that allow adjustments to be made before everything is locked tight. Rods are selected of the appropriate length and contoured to the correct bend (lordosis) for the individual.
