Spinal Fusion

Spinal fusion is the joining together of vertebrae in the spine with bone so that they effectively become one bone, and is used to help with symptoms of severe pain affecting the lower back.

Posterior Interbody Cages

What are the cages made from?

cageThe cages are made from PEEK, a strong biocompatible material which is similar in its “springiness” to bone. This reduces stress loading of the vertebra. Equally importantly, the material is invisible on x-ray examination. There are marker beads which allow us to see where the cages are placed but because they are transparent we are able to assesss the progress of your fusion.

How are the Cages adapted to an individual?

It is important to select the right cages, both to fit in the disc space after clearing out the disc material and to recreate the proper orientation of the vertebrae. When the disc wears out and collapses the space narrows and the angulation (or lordosis) between the vertebrae reduces significantly. Introducing cages into the disc space which restore the height and angulation is important for good trunk balance and to protect other levels in the spine. A wide range of cage heights and angulations are available.

I had keyhole surgery by Mr Boeree in June 2006 and it was completely successful. I was no longer in any pain what so ever!! I’m really delighted that I went ahead with the surgery and want to thank Nick Boeree and his staff for everything that they have done for me!!
